New Student Information
The following is important information for you to know before you begin your graduate program at Northeastern University. Please read the information on this page carefully and take any required steps. We look forward to meeting you at New Student Orientation!
Get familiar with your myNortheastern account. Most functions and services related to your academic experience at Northeastern (e.g. course registration, course schedule, student accounts, etc.) you will find under the Self-Service tab. Also, use your myNortheastern account to access your student email account. You are encouraged to start checking your student email regularly.
Managing Your Email to Receive Important Communications
It is important that you get into the habit of checking your student email account regularly. You can access your email by logging into your myNortheastern account or going to office365.northeastern.edu. You may find that there are already important emails waiting for you.
Health Insurance
All students studying in Canada are required to have health insurance. In BC Students are eligible for MSP our Provincial Medical Services Plan. If you are new to Canada or BC there is a 90 wait period for MSP and Northeastern has a preferred rate for all students through Guard.me. In Addition all students are eligible to apply for supplemental insurance through guard.me, supplemental insurance must be applied for immediately after the 90 day insurance expires. Once you have your MSP number it is also recommended that you apply for Fair Pharmacare. For more information please click here.
Please note that the extended Medical Coverage and MSP do not included Optical or Dental insurance so students are encouraged have check ups before they arrive in Vancouver.
Husky Student ID Card
All students will be required to wear their student ID card (Husky Card) while on campus. In addition all students will require a building access card issued at Campus Orientation. All new students must complete their Husky ID form, available in your Campus Orientation Course on Canvas in Mid July. Deadline to complete the Husky ID form is August 20th, 2023.
New Student Orientations
Welcome New Students!
Orientations help you get ready to make the most of your graduate school experience and Northeastern . All students are required to complete the orientations that pertain to them. These sessions are delivered in person and are designed to help new students learn about both the Vancouver campus, university resources, and other pertinent information.
There are three types of New Student Orientations:
- Campus Orientation (for all students)
- College Orientation (for your specific program)
- International Student Orientation (for all international students)
Campus Orientation will be held on Campus late August 2023, College Orientations will follow. You will receive an email from Serena Conlon, Associate Director of Student Services, with information about how to register for in person Orientation and access the virtual pre arrival orientation. All new students are expected to complete orientation before starting classes at Northeastern and won’t be given campus access unless their final quiz is complete.
College Orientation
The College of Engineering, College of Professional Studies, College of Arts, Media and Design, and Khoury College of Computer Sciences each host their own college-specific orientation with specific information on classes, advising, and resources. Contact your Academic Advisor for more information.
International Student Orientation will be held in late September once classes have started. You will receive an email from OGS Canada with information about how to access this Orientation. This presentation will cover topics including immigration documents, how to maintain status throughout your program, the basics behind a Coop Work Permit, Health Insurance and Post Grad Work Permit.

Please make sure you have read the information in the left-hand column about your myNortheastern account, email, and Husky Student ID! You MUST upload your picture in order to receive a Husky ID, and you must have a Husky ID to access campus.
