We Care

The We Care program is a support system for students during times of difficulty or challenge. We Care is a network of administrative offices, university faculty, and staff who are dedicated to helping our students address and solve problems so they can reach their full potential. Our partnership with many programs and departments across the Northeastern campus allows us to work together seamlessly to provide support services for a wide variety of challenges, from interpersonal problems and academic concerns to medical or mental health issues and personal tragedies.

Find

Find at Northeastern offers 24/7 mental health support for all full time Northeastern students, regardless of health insurance policy (meaning, you do not need to be enrolled in NUSHP to access Find). All students are eligible for five free counseling sessions per term, and sessions can be held virtually and in a variety of languages. Access Find to speak with an experienced clinician, get a referral for one-to-one counseling and access to free counseling sessions, and even schedule an appointment with a local or video counselor.

OPEN

The Office of Prevention and Education at Northeastern provides prevention and education services on the topics of alcohol and other drugs, sexual violence, and sexual health. OPEN seeks to provide supportive, accessible and non-judgmental services to students as well as to engage our community on wellness-related topics. Disability Resource Center Students needing accommodations or services due to a disability are able to access Northeastern’s Disability Resource Center. You will find information about who the DRC serves, its staff and contact information, and other available services, including how to start the accommodation process.

Northeastern University Employer Engagement and Career Design specializes in helping students figure out which career path might work best for them. They also provide support in searching for a job, building a network, preparing for an interview, etc. One-hour phone or video chat appointments can be made with a Northeastern career counselor Mondays through Thursdays, 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST, and Fridays, 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. PST. You can schedule an appointment through myNortheastern or by contacting 617.373.2430. NUwork is Northeastern’s database of career and cooperative education (co-op) opportunities. Northeastern students and alumni who have 0-3 years of work experience can use NUcareers to research and apply for internships and post-graduation jobs.

The Writing Center is made up of Northeastern University writing instructors and graduate students studying composition theory, literature, ­and technical or professional writing. The Writing Center offers online consulting for any level writer and works with graduate students from all academic disciplines, speakers of other languages, as well as native speakers of English, and weak, average, and strong writers.   Sign up for online appointments up to one week in advance.

The Northeastern University Library offers an online hub of resources, as well as library staff who are available via phone 24 hours a day to assist students with access to the more than 548,806 e-books and 83,511 electronic journals available. Silicon Valley students have their own library home page with contacts and resources available here. • Kanopy: Free movies, documentaries, and more with your Northeastern credentials! Over 30000 Documentaries, Classic and Indie Films.
• O’Reilly for Higher Education: O’Reilly includes more than 35,000 book titles from industry-leading publishers such as Sam’s, O’Reilly, Peachpit, and Que plus 30,000 hours of video, proven learning paths, case studies, interactive tutorials, audio books, and videos from O’Reilly’s global conferences.

The International Students Library Guide provides resources and information that are particularly useful for an international student to navigate the physical and online environment at the University Libraries.

Global Student Success (GSS) offers academic, cultural, and English language support to the entire international and non-native English-speaking community at Northeastern University through:

• The International Tutoring Center: Through student-centered tutorials our professional tutors assist and empower students in the development and confidence of their English skills. Appointments are 50 minutes and can be made up to three times per week. Focus areas include: Writing, Conversation, Pronunciation, Presentation, TOEFL, Career Preparation and Reading.
• Language and Culture Workshops: This workshop series covers both academic skills and strategies as well as U.S. American cultural topics.
• Reading Workshops: This three part series reviews different genres of writing, from fiction, and critique to non-fiction, providing strategies for academic and personal reading success and enjoyment.
• Writing Workshops: This six part series breaks down the art of writing to assist students in developing and enhancing their academic, professional and personal writing skills
• Listening and Speaking class: This non-credit course is designed to help students feel comfortable and confident in speaking English, whether in informal or small talk conversations with friends and classmates, or in professional presentations and interview settings.
• Recorded Workshop library: To review workshops at your convenience or to aid faculty and staff in professional development, please visit our ever expanding library of resources.

Northeastern’s Information Technology Services provides central support for technology infrastructure, services, and applications to more than 30,000 students, faculty, and staff and a host of other services tailored to the online student. Check out some of the resources available to graduate students here. As a Northeastern student, you have access to the full Microsoft 365 suite as well as Adobe Creative Cloud.  The Adobe Creative Cloud suite is available online via Northeastern’s Windows Virtual Desktop.  A license to the full suite, including more than 20 desktop and mobile app offerings for photography, design, video, web, UX and more, is now also available to students by request. Students who would like the full license and the ability to download can request one through the Tech Service Catalog (this link to request requires a myNortheastern login and is only accessible to students). Faculty and staff, including sponsored accounts, have full access, no request necessary. What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that provides: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in all university programs and activities, including, but not limited to; student services, academic programs, class assignment, grading, athletics, admissions, recreation, recruiting, financial aid, counseling and guidance, discipline, housing, and employment. The OUEC is responsible for investigating and resolving all complaints of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation at Northeastern. The Assistant Vice President for University Equity and Compliance / Title IX Coordinator coordinates the University’s response to complaints involving all forms of discrimination. Anyone who experiences or is aware of discriminatory conduct is urged to report the matter immediately to the OUEC for appropriate response. The University’s policies strictly prohibits retaliation against an individual for reporting perceived discrimination or participating in a resulting investigation.

Northeastern University has processes in place to ensure that student grievances are treated with respect and addressed in a fair and professional manner. 

At the Vancouver campus, students can contact the on-site Associate Director of Student Services or the campus Associate Dean, as well as consult the university website for information on academic policies and procedures: University Ombuds, University Registrar, and Graduate Catalog/University-Wide Academic Policies and Procedures.

Established procedures and policies regarding student grievances have been examined and rendered consistent with Canadian law and norms.

The Graduate Catalog contains Northeastern’s primary statements about student academic life and conduct, and the responsibilities of students and the university to one another, as authorized by the president or the Board of Trustees.
